FAQs

ABOUT REMY

What is made-to-measure, and how does it differ from off-the-rack or bespoke?

Made-to-measure means we start from a block (a base template) and use it to draft an individual pattern from your measurements. Your garment is then cut and made from that pattern, so the fit is yours from the outset rather than something adjusted after it's already been made.

Off the rack is ready-made and cut to a standard size in the hope that it's close to yours. The bespoke process drafts a pattern entirely from scratch over many fittings and at significant cost. Made-to-measure sits between the two; a garment cut for your body, made well, without the time and expense of full bespoke.

How much does a made-to-measure suit cost?

Our made-to-measure suiting starts from $1,895, and shirting from $395. Final pricing depends on the cloth you choose and the garment itself, so the best way to get an accurate figure is to come in for a chat with no obligation to buy.

Starting prices across the made-to-measure range:

Suiting, from $1,895

Trousers, from $495

Shirting, from $395

Overcoats, from $1,695

Car coats, from $1,795

Mackintosh, from $1,595

M65 jacket, from $1,795

Bomber jacket, from $1,295

Overshirt, from $1,195

Gilet, from $795

Do you offer womenswear?

Not at the moment. REMY is a menswear atelier, and menswear is all we do. That focus is deliberate; it's what lets us build real depth in cut, cloth and construction rather than spreading ourselves thin.

The Process and Fabric

How do I place an order?

It starts with a conversation. Come in for a chat, no obligation, and tell us what you're looking for. Once you're ready to proceed, we can book you in for a fitting and guide you through cloth and design before taking your measurements, and placing the order from there.

What are your opening hours?

We're open Tuesday to Saturday by appointment. First appointments are generally from 9am, with the last beginning at 5pm. We're always happy to work around you and if you need a time outside these hours then get in touch and we can discuss options.

Can I visit the showroom without an appointment?

You're welcome to drop in and have a look at what we do and explore some of the samples we have available. For fittings, consultations and orders we'd recommend booking an appointment, so we can make sure someone's free to help you.

What is your typical turnaround time?

Around four to six weeks from your first fitting to trying on the finished garment, and alterations, if required, are usually completed in under a week. If you're working to a deadline like a wedding or an event, just let us know early and we'll tell you honestly whether it's achievable.

What happens at a fitting, and how many should I expect?

Most orders involve three fittings. The first is where it all happens: we guide you through cloth, design and finishings, then take a full set of measurements to build your fit profile. That appointment runs thirty minutes to an hour. Around four to six weeks later, you come in for a second fitting to try the garment on and we'll make note of any adjustments required; this usually takes about thirty minutes. Once any alterations are done, there's a final fitting to check everything sits exactly as it should before you take it home.

How does fabric and design selection work?

Cloth and design are chosen together at your first fitting. We'll walk you through the options such as lapels, buttons, linings and pockets. The showroom has a good range of samples to look at, try on, and use as a guide to how your finished garment might look. If you know exactly what you want, we'll move quickly; if you need a hand, then we're happy to help.

Can I use my own fabric, or request something specific?

In most cases, yes. We work with a considered range of mills and can order specific cloths by name or code if you have something particular in mind. If you'd like to supply your own fabric, have a chat with us first and we'll check if it's suitable for the garment before we go ahead. For client-supplied cloth, our making charge starts at our entry price for that garment (e.g. $1,895 for a suit) due to the cost involved in shipping the fabric to our workshop.

Can I bring a garment or photos as inspiration?

Please do. A jacket you love the fit of, a photo of a lapel shape you like or a screenshot of the colour you're after. It all helps us get the best result for you so bring whatever you've got. We can't always match an image exactly, but we'll be clear about what's possible and how close we can get to a reference.

Can you help me decide what suits me?

That's a large part of what we do. Our fitters have deep experience and a good eye, and they'll steer you on cut, cloth and colour based on how you like to dress and the gaps in your wardrobe that you're looking to fill. Whether it's your first suit, black tie, or something more relaxed, come in with as much or as little of an idea as you like.

ORDERING AND PAYMENTS

What payment methods do you accept, and how does the deposit work?

We take all major credit cards or we can provide an invoice for EFT. To begin an order we ask for a 50% deposit, with the balance paid at your final fitting, before you collect your garments. If your garments are being shipped, we'll settle the balance before they're sent. If anything about the payment side isn't clear, just ask and we'll talk it through.

What if I need to adjust an existing order?

It's best to get in touch straight away. Our team usually passes orders to the workshop within a day or two, and once an order is in production, changes can't be made. Some smaller details, like a trouser cuff or a fit adjustment, can still be handled at your second fitting. If something's come up, call or email us as soon as you can and we'll let you know honestly what's still possible.

How can I purchase a gift card?

You can buy a gift card directly through our website, though most people prefer to arrange one over the phone so we can tailor it to what they have in mind. They can be made out for any amount, and we'll post the physical voucher out once it's sorted. Gift cards are valid for three years from purchase.

How do I collect my order?

Once your garments are finished and you've had your final fitting, they're yours to take home the same day. If you'd prefer, we can arrange a local courier to your home or office, or ship them further afield, both at an added cost. We'll settle the balance before anything is dispatched.

What if I'm an interstate or remote client?

For your first order, we really need to see you in person. The first fitting is where we build your fit profile, and getting that right is what makes everything after it work. Once your block is on file, reorders are easy to handle remotely.

We have made garments for remote and overseas clients before, a groomsman in a wedding party being one example, but without an in-person fitting we can't guarantee the result the same way. If getting to us isn't possible, get in touch and we can discuss what we can do.

Can you accommodate after-hours or weekend appointments?

We can often help. Saturday appointments are part of our normal week, and while our standard hours run until 5pm, we know plenty of clients are fitting us in around work. If you need an early start or a later finish, get in touch and we'll do our best to find a time that works.

GARMENT CARE AND ALTERATIONS

What is your policy on alterations, and what if my fit changes?

Alterations to get the fit right are part of the process. While we're still refining the fit, there's no charge, that's simply a part of the process.

Once you've collected and worn a garment, any later alterations are charged at cost. So if your body changes down the track bring your garments in and we can often adjust them back to a good fit. We'll always tell you what's involved before we go ahead.

How should I care for my garments, and what if one is damaged?

Good tailoring lasts if you look after it. Rest garments between wears, brush them rather than over-dry-cleaning, and store them on proper hangers with room to breathe. If something is damaged, whether it's a snag, a seam or general wear, bring it to us before taking it elsewhere. In many cases we can repair it. Repairs are charged at cost and we can provide an estimate before we begin.
